Feeding Tubes

If a patient is unable to swallow or requires nutrition/hydration through alternative means a feeding tube may be placed.

  • Types of Feeding Tubes

There are three types of feeding tubes : Nasogastric Tube (NG Tube), Nasojejunal Tube (NJ Tube), and Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). NG tubes are placed through the nose while NJ and PEG tubes are placed directly in the stomach.

  • Discharged with a Feeding Tube

When a patient is sent home with a feeding tube, a Registered Dietitian will work with a home health agency and an infusion company to ensure the patient is receiving adequate hydration and nutrition.

In these cases, a nurse will demonstrate use of an equipment and provide instruction for care/cleaning and an infusion company will provide the formula used for feeding.

  • How Can A Registered Dietitian Help

We understand this process can be overwhelming and a difficult transition.

A Registered Dietitian is able to determine: type of formula needed, adequate calorie intake, and appropriate feeding schedule.
